Typical issues overlooked when troubleshooting a broadband connection
- Modem In Standby
- Cable TV Off: Outage
- Modem Not Plugged In
- Modem Coax Cable Loose
- Ethernet or USB Cord Disconnected
- New Router
Various cable modems have a standby mode. When the modem is in standby, the computer is disconnected from the Internet service and standby indicator will be lit. In order to regain Internet access, press the standby button usually located on teh top of the modem. The standby indicator will then turn off, and the Internet connection will be re-established.
If the Cable TV is down, then there is an outage in the area. The Internet connection will be down as well.
If a user has a surge protector, make sure the cable modem is firmly plugged in and the surge protector is on and active. Also check the other end of the power cord that plugs into the modem.
Check both ends of the round coaxial cord (at the cable modem and wall outlet or splitter) to make sure it is firmly attached. If the lights do not change, try moving the cable modem in different positions to improve the signal.
Ethernet or USB Cord Disconnected
Check that the cord going from the cable modem to the computer or router is firmly connected on both ends. Verify that the indicator lights are lit on the modem. If there is a spare Ethernet or USB cord, try swapping another cord of the same type to make sure the cord is not damaged.
If a router has recently been purchased, the local tech support might need to be notified so they can release the old IP address while the equipment is power cycled.
